Structure of the Shield Chart

The Shield Chart consists of fourteen valid positions (though some traditions count sixteen to allow for duplicate observations) arranged in a shield or pyramid layout. The Four Mothers sit at the top, followed by the Four Daughters, then the two Nephews, the Right Witness, the Left Witness, the Judge, and finally the Reconciler at the very bottom.

The derivation rule remains uniform: merging figures two by two. The corresponding lines of two figures are compared; if they are identical (both single or both double), they yield an active line (single point); if they are different, they yield a passive line (double points), generating a new figure.

The Mothers (Four Mothers)

The Four Mothers are the 'seeds' of the entire chart, generated directly from the random casting. The First and Second Mothers are often seen as the interaction between the querent and the question itself, while the Third and Fourth Mothers introduce external environmental factors and other people.

When reading the Mothers, look beyond the fortune of individual figures. Observe whether the elemental and planetary relationships among the four are conflicting or harmonious.

The Daughters (Four Daughters)

The Four Daughters are built horizontally from the lines of the Four Mothers: the First Daughter takes the top lines of all four Mothers, the Second Daughter takes the second lines, and so on. They represent the internal logic and hidden layers of the situation, often showing 'how things unfold'.

The Nephews

The First Nephew is formed by merging the First and Second Daughters; the Second Nephew is formed by merging the Third and Fourth Daughters. They act as intermediate synthesized information, representing two mid-level conclusions derived from internal factors.

The Witnesses

The Right Witness is derived from merging the two Nephews; the Left Witness is derived from merging the First and Second Mothers. The Right Witness is traditionally linked to the 'visible result' or external manifestations, while the Left Witness relates to the querent's own attitude and resources. Comparing the two reveals whether inner states match outer realities.

The Judge

Formed by merging the Left and Right Witnesses, the Judge is the heart of the Shield Chart's verdict, directly answering 'where the outcome leans'. When interpreting, evaluate the Judge's planetary and elemental attributes to determine if the overall energy indicates advancement, delay, conflict, or reconciliation.

If the Judge is favorable but the Left Witness is unfavorable, it suggests a positive outcome achieved through an uphill battle, and vice versa.

The Reconciler

The Reconciler is derived from combining the Judge and the First Mother, offering insight into the final adjustment, aftermath, or resolution. Some traditional systems call this the 'way out' or 'resonance,' answering: 'What residual effects remain after the matter settles?'
